Kinbrae House is only a short walk to one of the busiest ports in Britain. The very deep waters of the Fal River Estuary and Carrick Roads are the reason for the centuries long history of this colourful and very much alive port.
There used to be a huge ship building industry at the docks but that has declined in recent years. However the harbour is now the place for shipping repairs and the fabulous Pendennis Ship Building Yard which manufactures super yachts is based there.
There are some incredible vessels that come to the harbour to visit or for repairs, from luxury super yachts to enormous cruise ships. There are many sailing events held throughout the year and it is a joy to see the Carrick Roads alight with brightly coloured sails jostling for first place.
During the summer season there are plenty of boat trips available, kayak and motor boat rentals and sailing courses on offer to those of you who wish to get their toes wet or exercise their sea legs when exploring our wonderful coastline. The best advise is to go to the quays in Falmouth and see what is on offer. The many boating trip companies based on the quays will each have something a bit different to offer but all trips will be seasonal and weather dependant. There are exciting rib adventures to go and look for dolphins and basking sharks as well as deep sea game fishing trips to choose from for the more adventurous seafarers.
You might be tempted to catch one of the Fal River Service boats that run from the various quays in Falmouth. There are lots of places to see so why not buy a ticket or a muscle card and let the boats do the rest of the work for you. It is a fantastic way to see this incredible coastline.
Fal River is an all year round service to Truro, St Mawes, Helford, Flushing and beyond. It’s a super stress-free way to travel and most services have a refreshment bar on board so you can have a little dram on route for medicinal reasons of course to keep out the cold and ward off sea monsters! There is usually a very humorous running commentary played out on most trips and their information is really interesting and tells tales of the history of the Carrick Roads and Helford Passage from a mariners perspective. A great fun experience.
